Ever wonder if God can actually use someone like you? Do you think you’re too weird, or not cool enough for God to use you for something great? I don’t think you’re alone, but I do think you’re weird — and that’s a good thing. God uses weird people in the Kingdom all the time, and He is more than willing to use you too.
I’ve come to the realization that I’m not the ‘cool kid.’ Even if people view me as their pastor or leader, I’m never the smartest person in the room, and I’m certainly not the ‘coolest.’ In fact, sometimes I’m strange. Sometimes I really don’t fit in, have the ‘right’ experience, or act the ‘right’ way. If I were to be honest, I think the best thing to call me is a ‘weirdo.’
Weirdo n. A person who is extraordinarily strange or eccentric.
And I think if we were all honest, we all would admit to having some ‘weirdness’ about us. But just because I’m different doesn’t mean God isn’t calling me to something great. I may be a ‘weirdo,’ but God is able to use my uniqueness, for His Kingdom. That concept has always amazed me.
Here’s the thing: at the end of the day, the Church is made up of ‘weirdos.’
When talking to the Corinthian church, Paul described how ‘weird’ they were. He didn’t do so because he wanted to make fun or belittle them; Paul wanted them to know that they were the Church, not by their own merit, but by the fact that God brought them together in unity for a purpose.
26 For consider your calling, brothers and sisters:not many of you were wise according to worldly standards,not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God,righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written,“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
All too often we try and fit into the ‘normal mold’ of Christianity. But what’s normal?
There’s nothing normal about God’s Kingdom. There’s no such thing as a ‘normal Christian.’ There’s no such thing as a ‘normal pastor’ or a ‘normal parishioner.’ It’s alright if Christians are weird. God uses that weirdness to bring about Kingdom work. Not so we can boast in our weirdness, but that we can boast in God’s ability to use our weirdness in the Kingdom! We all have something different to offer.
But just because Christians are weird, doesn’t mean they’re dumb, weak and poor…
‘Not many’ of us are wise…powerful…or wealthy. What does that mean?
It means some may have those attributes, but it’s not what defines the Church. God chooses those who are ‘foolish to shame the wise…the weak to shame the strong…those who have nothing, to bring something.’ Why? Because we are not defined by our abilities, but our identity in Christ. Every weirdness is unified in Christ, as Christ becomes our wisdom and strength.
Therefore we won’t boast in our weirdness, but boast in God when he uses our weirdness for the Kingdom. When we do so, we have no choice but to submit ourselves to His strength. We are completely dependent on God — not because we are weak, but because the only thing we have of value is our willingness to serve.
God doesn’t care about what YOU bring to the Kingdom, He only cares that you’re willing to SERVE in the Kingdom. And when we finally understand that, we’ll truly understand humility, and be blessed knowing that God can use everyone.
So find and embrace your ‘weirdness’ and let God use it as we celebrate what God is doing!
